After finishing in 3rd place in the 2003/04 Bundesliga, Leverkusen participated in the Champions League and made it to the Round of 16 before losing to the eventual winners of the competition. Dimitar Berbatov was the club's top scorer for a second consecutive season with 26 goals in all competitions.
